How to Choose Dog Foods Correctly

Canine nutrition is a conundrum that people are often faced with and it can be quite a touchy subject. Thousands of food options exist and choosing the best one is often a very challenging issue that pet owners are left to tackle. There are opinions galore from veterinarians, breeders, trainers, pet food store workers, dog trainers and other pet owners. Ultimately the decision is left to you to choose the best possible food that your dog needs. Here are some tips to identify the best foods that suit(s) your dog(s).

When it comes to making dog food choices inevitably the following are the key areas to be addressed:

1. Veterinary Prescription Diets
2. Holistic / Natural Commercial Diets
3. Premium Dog Food
4. Economy Dog Food
5. Homemade / Raw Diets

Commercial foods are either available as wet or dry and you can make a choice depending on what suits your dog best. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has developed several profiles for dog and puppy nutrition. These standards are meant to be reflected on the dog food label. Make sure you read these labels and get well acquainted with them. However do remember that labels can be misleading.

Having done your research and deciding on a general diet plan for your dog, ask other dog owners their experiences with various diets. Different dogs react differently to different diets and make sure you narrow down your choices with all these different information you gain. Do not forget to let your dog SAMPLE the diet it prefers. Most companies are more than willing to offer you a few different foods as samples and let your dog decide for itself as to which food is palatable!

Once you make a decision to change the food, add increasing amounts of the new food to the old food before gradually removing the old food completely. If the dog is responding well to the new diet continue with it. If it falls ill do consult the veterinarian and revert back to the old diet if the new one does not agree with your dog.
