I'm sure there are many dog owners out there who, although they planned to take control early and show their dog who is the boss, have somehow ended up being under the control of the dog. Some dogs do take control of their owner's life which at times can be very frustrating. It is important that your dog knows right from the start that YOU are the 'leader of the pack'.
A dog needs to know it's boundaries for its own sake as well as for the sake of the family members. It is good for your dog to be able to socialize with other dogs but some discipline measures need to be taken to ensure that your dog will socialize well. If a dog is left to think that he is the 'leader of the pack' in the home then he will try to show that leadership with other dogs and could become aggressive with other dogs.
If your dog it too attached to you as its owner it may become a problem in that he may not let anyone near you. This can make your friends feel uncomfortable to visit your home if they are feeling threatened by your dog. If you have children in your home it is even more essential that you let your dog know its place in the home. Your dog needs to take place at the bottom of the pack and even the children need to hold a position above the dog in the pecking order.
Puppies need discipline to know who the boss is. By setting the rules early your dog will be an absolute pleasure to have as a member of your family. To learn more about setting the rules for your dog, click here!
