Pet Stress Causes and Natural Remedies

So what else can you do for your beloved dog or your feisty kitty after you give them the best food on the planet, take them for walks every day and have them chase their favorite toy at home? Beyond a high-quality diet, regular exercise, and reducing exposure to various environment toxins, the best thing we can do for our pets is to reduce the stress our pets experience.

The connection between mind and body is no longer stuff of science fiction and now it is a well researched scientific fact that both in humans and in pets, the emotional stress plays a central role in well-being. While you may not be able to teach your dog or cat to articulate and chant holy sounds used for meditation, there are other things you can do.

Just remember to share these ideas with your traditional veterinarian with a bit of caution. He or she still may be in the mode of where traditional physicians were decades ago.

Some breeds of dogs and cats are naturally "high-strung." And almost any dog and cat that been lost of abandoned and has gone through rescue process are especially susceptible to stress. Just like in humans, pets experience stress by major life events, daily stressful situations in environment and in relationships, events such as addition of new pets or human family members, death of loved ones, home improvement projects, or moving. The stress of these events can stay many pets for months.

Cats can be particularly sensitive to environmental changes - even installing a new carpet can stress cats in a big way. Dogs get more stressed with shifts in relationships. This is where the use of "security blanket" come in and helps them out.

Keep your cat's favorite pillow or blanket around and don't pack it away in a box as you are moving or remodeling. Take time with your dog when you introduce a new family member to make sure that he doesn't feel left out and confirm your dog's hierarchy for him.

For predictable events that cause your pet stress like going to the vet's office, car travel, thunderstorms, boarding, family vacations, or visitors in the home there are effective remedies such as pheromone-based sprays that help soothe pets. For pets susceptible to extreme physical reactions like crying, nausea, vomiting or trembling, you can checkout herbal remedies for stress to help calm them physically. And don't forget homeopathic stress remedies that work well, especially for pets sensitive to herbal products. And there are interactive toys for dogs who suffer from separation anxiety.
